Welcoming

With over 1,000 students enrolled this summer, our building expansion is ​providing the safe space we planned for all along. While spirit weeks, field ​days, and special activities are happening inside our walls, the bus fleet still ​gets put to work in the summertime transporting students to specialized field ​trips all over the county and of course to the long-standing tradition of Camp ​Spencer.

While those traditions like fishing, canoeing and tie-dying at Camp Spencer ​are a guaranteed part of our summertime plans, we’ve added some new ​items to the list. We couldn’t move forward through the summer without ​continuing some of the crucial work that was taking place during the ​Afterschool Program – Programs like counseling and tutoring.

Even in the summer, 3 Certified Counselors (one more than ​during our Afterschool Program) are here to serve all our age ​groups. They focus on teaching emotional regulation skills and ​social skill development. One of our counselors, Ms. Carter, is ​starting a Mental Inspirational Supportive and Social (MISS) ​Positive Vibes Crew which will consist of a group of 10-15 middle ​school girls she gathers once a week. This group provides them ​with a safe environment to discuss any social issues they are ​facing and learn effective communication skills.

Here at the Club, we know that mental health doesn’t stop when school lets out – and neither ​does learning. This summer we also have 14 Certified Teachers serving as tutors on staff ​with us supporting about 230 students. They focus on Science, Reading and Math summer ​learning, while having the extra time to really dive deeper into STEAM projects. Summer ​Brain Gain, a BGCA implemented program, targets STEAM specifically for elementary ​students and has allowed them to create some amazing projects.
